Concern over pool sex complaints

Police have written to managers of a new £32m swimming pool voicing concern about complaints of inappropriate sexual behaviour on the premises.

The latest saw a man, 27, arrested on suspicion of taking mobile phone photographs of a teenager in a communal changing room at the Cardiff Bay pool.

Officers said they had received 17 complaints since Cardiff International Pool opened in February 2008.

The pool's management said it has increased its security systems.

South Wales Police are appealing for information about the latest incident which occurred at the £32m pool at around 1830 BST on Monday.

The arrested man has been bailed pending further inquiries.

"We are confident that we will continue to catch any individuals that target the facility "

Other complaints at the pool have included flashing, voyeurism and indecent touching.

Insp Tony Bishop of Cardiff Central police station, said: "We have contacted Cardiff Bay International Pool expressing our concern about the number of incidents that have taken place in the premises.

"As always we would advise people to be aware of their surroundings and report any individuals acting suspiciously to contact the on-duty manager and South Wales Police immediately."

He said police continued to investigate and a number of arrests had been made.

Simon Hughes, the pool's general manager pool, said: "As an extremely busy public facility the level of crime is exceptionally low which is testament to the staff and security arrangements that are currently in place.

"We are confident that we will continue to catch any individuals that target the facility and will work closely with the police to ensure appropriate evidence is gathered to allow criminal prosecution.

"Since initial discussions have taken place with South Wales Police, we have increased our security systems and re-trained all staff to be extra vigilant and have an increased presence in all areas of the building.

He added: "This had led to arrests being made and it is our expectation that the police will also support this further with an increased level of patrols in and around the area"
