Police name fatal crash victims

Two teenagers and an elderly man who were killed in a road crash in Conwy have been named by police.

The driver of the Citroen Saxa was David Gwyn Watkins, 18, from Old Colwyn.

His passenger was Andrew John Glyn McDavid, 18, from the Denbigh area. Clifford Kirkman, 85, of Llanddulas, also died in a Rover 25.

A fire officer said the crash, at 1220 GMT on Thursday at Old Colwyn, was one of the worst he had experienced.

The road near the former Hotel Seventy degrees was closed for hours after the incident.

The family of Mr Kirkman said he would be "sorely missed".

"Clifford was the beloved husband to Rose, father to Stephen and Denise, and grandfather to Victoria, Ruth, Ian, Kelly, Amanda, Sara and Thomas," said a statement.

Police wanted people to see the wreckage to highlight dangers on the roads.

After the incident, police allowed access to film the wreckage of the cars because they wanted to highlight potential dangers on the road.

Paul Jenkinson, operations manager for the North Wales Fire and Rescue Service, said it was one of the worst crashes he had seen in his 15-year career.

He said: "We had two very, very badly damaged cars in the road and we couldn't determine which way they were going - the police are carrying out a full investigation. "

Police have appealed for witnesses to contact them.
