School to shut after burst main

Workers at the site of the burst main

Pupils have been given an extra day to their half term holiday after a water main burst outside their school.

Radyr Comprehensive School in Cardiff has been forced to remain shut on Monday after the incident left 14,000 people without water.

Engineers restored supplies on Monday after Sunday's incident and Welsh Water has apologised for the inconvenience.

The road outside the school will remain closed until further notice while highways repairs are carried out.

Engineers closed Heol Isaf as they worked to restore supplies to customers who have been without water since the fault.

Access will be maintained for residents and emergency vehicles.

A Welsh Water spokesman said: "All our customers should now have had their supplies returned."

He said some customers may experience discolouration for a short period while the system returns to normal.

A decision on when the school will reopen will be made on Monday.

A hole created by the flow of water

George Aspros was one of the customers affected, he told how he noticed a large hole had appeared on his driveway during the night after the water main had burst.

Bottle water has been delivered to some customers on the 'at risk' register.

One resident described the water burst as "like an earthquake"

"All the water was flooding down the hill and coming up through the cracks in the road," she added.

If these problems persist customers are advised to contact Welsh Water on 0800 052 0130.
