Car park death witnesses traced

Gwent Police say seven of the eight people they wanted to trace over the death of a man in fancy dress outside a pub have come forward.

Detectives say they still want to speak to one woman seen on CCTV cameras near where Gareth Davies was attacked.

The 26-year-old, from Llangibby, near Usk, Monmouthshire, was dressed as a Ghostbuster when injured trying to break up a fight in Cwmbran a year ago.

He died in hospital, three days after the assault.

Two 22-year-old Cwmbran men later arrested were released without charge.

Police re-appealed for information a year on from Mr Davies's death. Mr Davies's father, Keith Davies, said the family "need to have some degree of closure" over the death.

Mr Davies died in hospital three days after the incident in the Wetherpoon's pub car park between 0030 - 0130 GMT on Sunday, 28 October, 2007.

He had been attending a fancy dress party that evening, and was raising money for the football team he played for, Pontnewydd United.

An inquest returned a verdict of unlawful killing and the coroner referred the case back to the Crown Prosecution Service.

After a review into the investigation, police said they wanted speak to eight people who were spotted on CCTV in or around the car park that night.

It is thought a number of them knew each other and spent some time together before leaving together on the night of the incident.

Det Supt Geoff Ronayne said: "We are grateful to those people who have come forward following our appeal today and we now continue to appeal for the one remaining woman to come forward.

"The investigation remains unresolved and as you can imagine this situation is becoming increasingly difficult for us as a family as we need to have some degree of closure"

"Again she could hold vital information to help us with our enquiry.

"In addition to this we're asking that anyone who may not have been caught on CCTV and was there on the night, or has spoken to anyone about the incident to come forward."

He added: "We are also still keen to speak with any taxi drivers who picked up anyone in Cwmbran town centre between 1am -2am on the morning of Sunday 28th October last year.

"It's possible the offender may have got into a taxi."

Det Supt Ronayne said Mr Davies had been a "well-thought-of young man".

Keith Davies said his son "was a keen sportsman and a wonderful son whose life was cut short in the most tragic of circumstances"

He said: "As a family we miss him more than words can say and know that nothing that can be said or done will ever bring him back.

"The investigation remains unresolved and as you can imagine this situation is becoming increasingly difficult for us as a family as we need to have some degree of closure."
