Woman rescued as flooding strikes

BBC Weather map

A stranded woman has been rescued from a car in floodwater and properties in mid and west Wales have been pumped out by fire crews after heavy rain.

The woman was brought to safety by firefighters at Troedyrhiw, near Newtown, Powys, just before 0700 BST.

Firefighters were also called out to a number of other areas and the Dyfi bridge at Machynlleth was closed.

But there was a dramatic improvement in some areas later, with families taking to beaches in north Wales.

Forecasters had predicted as much as 70mm (3in) of rain for parts of Wales and other areas of central and southern Britain.

A series of flood warnings and flood watches was issued by the Environment Agency for several parts of Wales.

Mid and West Wales Fire Service diverted flood waters at a property near Garth Mill, Montgomery.

Police said there were two main road closures due to flooding - the A487 Glandyfi to Machnylleth, and the A490 Welshpool to Forden.

In Carmarthenshire, fire crews were called out to pump floodwater from the basement of the Llwyndafydd Arms at Saron, Llandyssul. There was also some flooding in Burry Port.

Mid and West Wales Fire Service also dealt with calls to properties in Welshpool, Newtown, Llanfair Caereinion, Montgomery, Machynlleth.

Dyfed-Powys Police said diversions were put in place after the Dyfi bridge was closed.

Across the UK, many rivers were placed under flood watch.

By Sunday afternoon, however, there was a significant improvement in areas such as north Wales, with day trippers enjoying sunshine and blue skies in resorts such as Rhyl, Colwyn Bay and Llandudno.

On Monday there will be a brief respite, with a cold and bright start, before the rain returns on Tuesday.
