Driver, 81, bailed after two die

An 81-year-old motorist has been bailed by police investigating a collision which killed two elderly women.

Doreen Morgan, 74, and Sylvia Softley, 73, died after the collision with a car in Cwmbran, Torfaen, on Friday. Both women were from the town.

The man, who is also from Cwmbran, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving after the accident before being bailed by Gwent Police.

The accident happened in Llandowlais Street, in the town's Oakfield area.

The women were taken to Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport following the incident, which happened at 1225 BST.

The man was uninjured.

Police said Ms Morgan died shortly after the crash and her friend died on Friday evening.

Insp Lee Ford, who is leading the investigation, said: "This is a tragic incident for all concerned and our thoughts go to the family of the deceased.

"A full and thorough investigation will take place."

The man has been bailed pending further inquiries.
