Support for doctor who lied

Dr David Thomas left his post as consultant cardiologist at Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor, two-and-a-half years ago after it was discovered he was not a member of the Royal College of Physicians, as he had claimed.

The protest on Monday coincides with a meeting of the North West Wales NHS Trust.

Dr Thomas's supporters - who include a number of former patients - want him returned to his old post, which has been advertised in the medical press.

After his resignation, his case was referred to the General Medical Council.

Members there decided he could continue to be registered as a specialist in general internal medicine and cardiology - for which he is qualified - as long as he works under supervision.

The Royal College of Physicians said he remains unregistered with them, although membership is not essential for a consultant post.

An industrial tribunal into Dr Thomas's case is due to be held in Caernarfon next month.
