Police warn on missing prisoner

John Stephen Howlett

Gwent Police are warning the public not to approach a convicted burglar who has failed to return to an open prison in Monmouthshire.

John Stephen Howlett, who is 30 and originally from Swansea, did not return to HMP Prescoed on Saturday.

He was convicted of burglary last August. Officers said it is believed he is a potential risk to the public as he is no longer in prison custody.

However, they said he is not a sex offender and is not on a life sentence.

Howlett is described as 6.1ft (1.86m) tall and of medium build. He has an oval face, brown eyes and a fair complexion.

Gwent Police said it has activated its operational plan with the aim of locating Howlett and Prescoed is co-operating fully.

Members of the public are advised not to approach Howlett and to call Gwent Police on 01633 838111.
