Key bridge crash road open again

The bridge on the A48 The westbound carriageway of the A48 Eastern Avenue into Cardiff, which shut after a lorry hit a bridge, has reopened.

The road links junction 29 of the M4 with the city centre, and the closure between Llanedeyrn and the Gabalfa interchange had caused delays.

Police said it stayed closed on Wednesday night for debris clearing.

The Penylan Road bridge will not re-open on Thursday and drivers are urged to find alternative routes.

It had been thought that the westbound carriageway could have been closed for up to a week following Tuesday's incident when a lorry bearing a crane crashed into the bridge.

The bridge carries Penylan Road over the dual carriageway and police said on Wednesday that the structural integrity of the bridge was being assessed.

The eastbound carriageway of the A48 was shut until late afternoon on Tuesday.

South Wales Police said Penylan Road from the junction of Colchester Avenue and Cyncoed Road and the road bridge would remain closed as inspection work is carried out.

A spokesman said: "Penylan Road bridge will remain closed and drivers who usually use the section of Penylan Road and the bridge are urged to find alternative routes."
