BT to ring in 800 new jobs

An announcement of 800 jobs at a call centre in south Wales is thought to be imminent.

British Telecom is expected to confirm the project in the next week.

It has already been confirmed by the leader of Rhondda Cynon Taff Country Borough Council Pauline Jarman. Rhondda Cynon Taff leader has confirmed the project
It is understood the call centre will be built on a reclaimed colliery site, with a three- storey building on the Nantgarw Industrial Estate in Treforest near Cardiff.

Coun Jarman said the scheme was a successful attempt to attract a range of businesses to Rhondda Cynon Taff.

"We are looking to diversify and I am hoping in the not too distant future to be able to announce more jobs."

The BT centre will be the third major call centre established in Wales this year.

In January, One to One announced it was setting up headquarters in Merthyr, creating a thousand jobs, and construction work is now underway.

Last month 7C and Manpower announced 600 jobs would be created in Pembroke Dock by its call centre.

And last week NTL said its new free internet service will create 500 jobs at its centres across south Wales.

Britsh Telecom has not confirmed or denied the development.

There has been no comment either from the Welsh Development Agency.
