Manhole-cover thieves target city

Manhole cover A council is warning of the dangers posed by thieves, possibly posing as council workers, who have stolen over 100 metal manhole covers in Cardiff.

Cardiff County Council said the uncovered holes, often five metres deep, posed a serious danger of injury.

It said most thefts were in quiet roads and thieves "could well be posing as council staff in fluorescent jackets".

The cost to Welsh Water of replacing the covers was far higher than their "minimal" scrap value, it added.

The manhole covers provide access to the sewerage pipes under the highway network.

A spokesman for the county council said: "When the metal manhole covers are stolen, it leaves a large hole in the ground often about five metres deep, which could cause serious injury if someone was to fall."

The council and Welsh Water are asking residents to report any suspicious activity.

Councillor Elgan Morgan, the council's executive member for environment and transport, said anyone who saw a theft taking place should call South Wales Police.

He said that anyone who discovered a manhole cover missing should contact the council immediately.

"The thefts are increasing and the council has to continually monitor the city to ensure that each area is made safe," he added.
