'Battle of Brive' players questioned

'Battle of Brive' players questioned
French detectives investigating the so-called "Battle of Brive" between Brive and Pontypridd are in Wales questioning members of the Welsh club.

Incidents on and off the pitch at Brive in 1997 during the European Cup tie tarnished the competition's reputation.

The incident landed Pontypridd with a heavy fine, which the club appealed against.

Tempers had flared during the game resulting in a mass brawl involving most of the players from the two sides.

The referee sent off Pontypridd's New Zealand forward Dale McIntosh and Brive went on to controversially win the match by one point.

Battered

The violence continued later that night in a bar when a fight between the players broke out.

Several battered members of the Brive team complained about the incident and three Pontypridd players were arrested before later being released.

South Wales Police has not been directly involved in the French investigation but has loaned two officers to support the visiting detectives.
