Monks install TV for Pope funeral

Caldey Island monastery The monks of Caldey Island are to have a television installed at the monastery for the first time so they can watch the Pope's funeral on Friday.

Because of the height of the building's walls, a satellite dish will be installed to pick up the TV signal.

A local supplier is lending a dish, which will be installed on Thursday and taken down soon afterwards.

Brother Francis said the order, based off the Pembrokeshire coast, did not watch TV but it was a "one off event".

Boats to and from Caldey Island, a popular tourist attraction, are to be cancelled on the day of the funeral following the death of Pope John Paul II on Saturday.

Installer Lyn Roberts, who is based in Llandybie near Ammanford, is providing the dish for free and will sail over with it on Thursday morning to set it up.

The Cistercian order was founded in 1929 and funds itself by making chocolate and perfume.

Members observe a strict no-speaking rule between 1900 BST and 0700 BST.

In the day time, they work alone and tend to only speak when necessary.

The monks also take vows of poverty, chastity and obedience when joining the monastery.
