Stereophonics earn their rock stripes

Welsh band The Stereophonics have scooped two major rock awards ahead of some heavyweight competition.

At the Kerrang! music paper rock ceremony, the band from the south Wales Valleys were presented with the Best British Band and Best Album awards in a vote by readers.

Performance and Cocktails, the band's second album, recently went double platinum, confirming their status as one of the most popular groups in the UK.

The Stereophonics had received six out of the 10 nominations for the night, which also featured legends such as Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osbourne.

Although they failed to sweep the board, the two additions to the band's trophy collection were hard won.

The double awards also confirmed The Stereophonics crossover appeal to both pop and rock audiences.

Solid fan base

They lost out, though, on the coveted rock award of Best Live Act to British act Three Colours Red.

Having cemented a solid fan base in the UK, the band from the former mining village of Cwmaman is now looking to conquer the all important rock arenas in the United States.

They hope to repeat scenes such as the sell-out 50,000 crowd at Morfa Stadium, Swansea.

Headlining

The Stereophonics are set to headline the V99 festival in Chelmsford, one of the summer's prestigious outdoor dates.

Performance and Cocktails has also earned the band a Mercury Prize nomination.

At the time of the Five Nations victory over England last spring, the band's cheeky trailer to the game - "As long as we beat the English" - was sung by thousands of jubilant rugby fans in Wales.
