Greggs bakery has said about 70% of the new posts will be at the company's firm in Treforest, near Pontypridd, with the remaining vacancies in the South West of England.

The 140 jobs in Treforest will be introduced over the year boosting the company's current workforce at the site to more than 500.

The Treforest site was opened in 1986 and the firm currently has 92 shops in Wales.

Greggs also took on about 200 new staff across the region during 2002.

The announcement has been made a month after 190 jobs were lost at the Alexon women's clothing plant in Hawthorn, near Pontypridd.
