Church's ex-manager to take stand

Charlotte Church
A High Court case involving singing star Charlotte Church continues with her ex-manager taking the stand to claim damages for loss of earnings.

The Cardiff-born soprano is being counter sued by Jonathan Shalit after he was sacked in January this year.

In court on Tuesday, Ms Church's mother was accused of being driven by money in the compensation case.

Opening the case for Mr Shalit, Ian Mill QC said like the title of her new album - Dream A Dream - Mr Shalit had "dreamed a dream" for Charlotte and believed in her.

Jonathan Shalit is widely credited with launching Charlotte's career after he heard her singing in a Cardiff pub.

He had placed his money where his mouth was, paid for demos and arranged a meeting with the chairman of Sony.

When he was sacked, Mr Shalit was told there had been a breakdown of trust and confidence, but this did not stand up to scrutiny, said Mr Mill.

He claimed the real reason for ending the contract was that Mr Shalit stood in the way of her mother's pursuit of money.

"The driving force on the Church side is Charlotte's mother - by her own admission a fiery and emotional person whose main aim is the pursuit and retention of money," he said.

But Mr Mill claimed the real reason for ending the contract was that Mr Shalit stood in the way of her mother's pursuit of money.

Sensitive questions

Cardiff-born Charlotte, 14, will be called to give evidence in court as Mr Shalit attempts to claim 20% of Charlotte's earnings up to 2002 and a cut of royalties received in the future from recordings made up to that date.

On Tuesday Charlotte made an unexpected visit to the court which she described as an "interesting experience".

Her press spokesman Julian Henry said it was "a spur of the moment decision" by the singer to check out the "atmosphere" of the courtroom in which she is due to give evidence.

She then went on to switch on London's Christmas lights, before entertaining crowds wtih three songs from her new album.

The schoolgirl may have to spend a day in the witness box answering sensitive questions about the behaviour of her mother Maria, 34.

Mr Shalit - who was sacked as Charlotte's manager in January - made strong allegations about Mrs Church, claiming she was a "pushy woman" determined to get her own way.

In court papers, counter-allegations made by Mrs Church claim that Mr Shalit once made lewd comments about Charlotte's chest and he once swore at her during a row over a plane ticket.

Charlotte's evidence is crucial to the court case but her youth and the need to protect her has been recognised.

Mr Shalit discovered Charlotte after he watched her perform on Jonathan Ross's big Talent Show in 1997.

Under his management, she sold millions of copies of her first two albums throughout the world.

The schoolgirl singer is one of only 55 women who recently made it into the Sunday Times league of the UK's top 500 financial earners.

Management agreement

Charlotte - whose earnings total around £10m - has made many high-profile appearances and has sung for President Clinton, the Queen and the Pope.

He was sacked by the Church family in January amid claims of improper behaviour and he is suing both Mrs Church and her husband James, aged 36, for breach of management agreement.

The case - which is expected to last for two weeks - continues.
