Inspectors are to visit Perth to make sure that historic or important buildings are given proper protection.
The Historic Scotland team will be looking for properties which merit listing and will reappraise those already on the register.
Building's can be given a category A, B or C listing depending on their importance.
Consent would then be needed if someone wanted to make changes to the building which could alter its character.
A building must have special architectural or historic interest to be considered for listing and Historic Scotland is looking for information from the public which may help them with their task.
Once the team have identified buildings of interest they will contact the council and, where possible, the owner.
Head of Listing Dr Deborah Mays said: "Perth has a distinguished architectural heritage with many outstanding buildings dating from the medieval period onwards.
"The resurvey will begin in the southern half of the city centre. This architecturally rich and diverse area includes many of the city's important commercial, civic and residential buildings."
