New £1.1m library opens in town

A new £1.1m state-of-the-art library has opened in Polmont.

The Meadowbank building is the first purpose-built library for the town and will offer features like a "gaming" chair and CD listening posts.

For the first time in a Falkirk Council library, a soft seating area has also been installed where users can drink tea and coffee and watch TV.

All stock in the building, such as books, DVDs, CDs and magazines are new and unused.

The library will also feature specific areas for children, young people and adults.

'Different requirements'

In addition to traditional reading material, computer game enthusiasts will be offered the use of specially designed chairs to play PlayStation 3 or Nintendo Wii games.

Dr Alex Waddell, the council's convener for education and leisure, said: "Meadowbank library will offer the best for users and has been designed to accommodate many different requirements that visitors have.

"The facilities themselves are fantastic and it is very pleasing to note that this is a first for the Braes area.

"The use of libraries is changing in modern society and by incorporating new and innovative features such as the ones found in Meadowbank, we can continue to ensure our communities have the best possible services for many years to come."

The new library will have extended opening hours on three of the six days it is open.

On Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays the library will be open from 0930 until 2000 GMT, while on Wednesday and Fridays it will close at 1700 GMT and on Saturdays at 1730 GMT.
