Police warning to rally watchers

Motorists have been warned that police will be getting tough on dangerous driving and illegal parking during a car rally in Perthshire this weekend.

About 150 racers and up to 15,000 spectators are expected for the Colin McRae Forest Stages Rally on Saturday.

A ceremonial start will take place in Perth before participating vehicles head to Fonab, near Grandtully, then race over five stages.

Organisers warn that ignoring parking regulations may jeopardise the event.

'Facing prosecution'

Former world rally champion Colin McRae died in a helicopter crash last September, along with his son and two family friends.

More than a dozen famous names from the world of rallying are taking part in Saturday's race, in some cases driving the historic cars which made them famous.

A statement from Tayside Police said: "We will monitor parking closely throughout the entire route and inconsiderate or dangerous driving and parking of vehicles will not be tolerated.

"Spectators are reminded that the A9 Perth to Inverness road is a 'clearway' and no parking is permitted on the road or verges.

"Any offending vehicles will be subject to removal, with the driver not only facing prosecution but they will be liable for any fees incurred in respect of the recovery.

"We also ask spectators to give consideration to local communities by ensuring access is available for ambulance and fire services, thus maintaining residents' safety."
