Young and Reader to receive award

Scottish singer Eddi Reader and television presenter Kirsty Young are to receive honorary awards from the University of Stirling.

The pair are being given doctorates for their work in music and broadcasting.

Outgoing chancellor Dame Diana Rigg, who has served in the role for 10 years, will preside over the graduation ceremonies on 25 and 26 June.

Dame Diana is being replaced by the presenter of Radio 4's Today programme, Jim Naughtie.

Kirsty Young's honorary doctorate is in recognition of her services to broadcasting.

The Crimewatch presenter, 39, was brought up and educated in Stirling before beginning her journalistic career as a newsreader for BBC Radio Scotland.

Glaswegian vocalist Eddi Reader, 38, achieved fame with the band Fairground Attraction, who had a UK number one with the single Perfect.

Also receiving awards at the university will be George Reid who was recently appointed Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland.

Baroness Margaret Ford will be given an honour for her work in public service reform, Baroness Vivien Stern for her work in penal reform and Jonathan Mills for his contribution to the arts.
