Shopkeeper stops selling toy guns

Toy gun (generic)

The owner of a newsagents in Dundee has stopped selling toy guns after school pupils were hurt by pellets.

A boy was suspended from Barnhill Primary following the incident on Wednesday.

It has been reported that two pupils were hit - one in the neck and one in the hand. Police have been speaking to children and staff at the school.

Naeem Zaveri, from Zaveri's newsagents, said he was "shocked" by what happened and had thought the toys were harmless.

'Wee toy'

He told the BBC Scotland news website that he thought the toy guns would have been something youngsters would enjoy playing with over the summer months.

He said: "It's not illegal to sell, but it looks like it's harmful so that's why I'm going to stop selling them.

"It's a wee toy, they can just play with it, but someone must have been abusing it.

"I was shocked, we mostly sell them over the summertime. It's a big seller, adults come and buy these things as well.

"We've never had any complaints or anything."

Mr Zaveri urged other retailers to consider taking the toy pellet guns off their shelves as well.
