Popular garden greenhouse smashed

The smashed greenhouse

Vandals have targeted a popular garden in Broughty Ferry, smashing nearly every pane of glass in a greenhouse.

About 70 panes at the Barnhill Rock Garden were shattered, causing up to £4,000 of damage. A metal flagpole was also bent and put through the glass.

The culprits struck sometime between 1630 BST on Friday and 0815 BST on Monday.

The greenhouse is used as an information point for visitors and police inquiries are continuing.

'Gratuitous smashing'

Dundee City Council's leisure, arts and communities convener, Richard McCready, said: "I was appalled by the level of damage there, it really is quite spectacular in its gratuitous smashing of glass all the way round the glass-house.

"It's a terrible sight to see the hard work of volunteers and staff ruined in this way.

"I think it gives a terrible impression of the city. This is a facility that has been awarded Green Flag status, it's amongst the best parks in its category in Scotland, but it's been vandalised in this terrible way."

He added that he would be liaising with police to discuss any crime prevention measures which could be taken in future.
