Man charged with alcohol offence

Alcopops A 35-year-old man has been charged after allegedly buying alcohol for a schoolboy in Dundee.

A member of the public called police after spotting youngsters in Fintry trying to persuade adults to purchase drink for them at the weekend.

Officers set up CCTV cameras and managed to trace the man they believe bought drink for the 14-year-old.

The teenager, and another boy of the same age, were given a police warning in front of their parents.

The arrest was part of Operation Dry Up, an effort by Tayside Police to tackle underage drinking and the anti-social behaviour which can go with it.

"I would ask people to follow the example of the person who called the police this weekend"
Insp Mark Duncan

On Friday and Saturday night police officers seized 15 litres of cider, 19 bottles and 10 cans of lager, as well as a bottle of whisky.

Officers also attended a dozen licensed premises to make them aware of Operation Dry Up.

An off-licence that was visited by a test purchasing team, which sees a 16-year-old try to buy alcohol, passed the test.

Insp Mark Duncan said: "No-one should be in any doubt that we will enforce the law when someone is traced buying alcohol for under-18s or selling it to them."

He added: "We are aware that youngsters will try to pressure adults into buying drink on their behalf and I would ask people to follow the example of the person who called the police this weekend."
