Nightclubs to use plastic glasses

A plastic pint glass Nightclub owners in Angus are to phase out the use of glass tumblers in a bid to provide a safer drinking environment for customers and staff.

Clubbers in the county will be given plastic versions of the iconic drinking glass.

The "glass" is almost unbreakable and will rule out chances of customers or members of staff being injured as a result of drink-related incidents.

Normal glasses will be completely phased out by the end of the year.

The new plastic tumblers carry the message "Be sensible. Keep safe. Enjoy your drink".

Ch Supt Bill Harkins, Angus Divisional Commander for Tayside Police, described the steps being taken by nightclub owners to introduce plastic glasses as a "milestone".

"The measures about to be taken by the nightclubs involved will provide a safer environment and I applaud the responsible attitude that they have shown in taking this voluntary step," he said.

"I would urge all licence-holders in Angus, who operate busy town centre pubs, to consider adopting a similar approach."

Focus on Alcohol Angus project manager Eileen McArthur added: "This is an excellent example of what the project is all about.

"The individuals involved have made a major achievement in terms of safety by taking a relatively simple step."
