Students create 'sensual' phones

The Aware phone Devices hailed as the next generation of mobile phones have been put on display at the University of Dundee.

Students from the College of Art, Science and Engineering's product design course have created six phones to support "intimacy and sensuality".

They include the Aware, which sends a tingle down your back if a friend is nearby and the Boom Tube, which allows people to make music together.

The phones have all been developed by second-year students.

Sarah McMichael, one of the students who designed the Aware, said: "This exhibition has a phone for everyone.

'Radical products'

"Our aim was to get away from the unsocial mobile phones that today's world is being taken over by, to learn to communicate and interact with each other on a new level."

Graham Pullin, co-founder of the Phone/Not Phone company, which offers alternative mobile phones, said: "Our founding principle is to offer our customers expressive new interactions rather than be driven by technological innovation for its own sake.

"Our Spring 2007 collection features six radical products developed by a new wave of interaction designers."

The exhibition is running at the User Centre in the University of Dundee's Queen Mother Building.
