Data centre plans put on display

Plans which developers say would create an £800m "data village" in southern Scotland have gone on display.

The site at Peelhouses near Lockerbie would be turned into an "international hub for the internet age" according to developers Lockerbie Data Centres Ltd.

The proposals also include a business park and up to 800 new homes.

Last year another firm, Internet Villages International, unveiled plans for a nearby site which it claimed would create a £600m data farm.

Lockerbie Data Centres chairman John Hume said Peelhouses was the perfect location for the development.

"The world wide shortage of suitable data storage and the high demand for local affordable housing presents a unique opportunity for Scotland and local residents," he said.

"If approved this development will be of national significance and will create the perfect environment for high value internet business to locate to the south west of Scotland."

The outline plans are on display at Lockerbie library until the end of the week.

The company said a planning application was expected to be lodged by March next year.
