Sainsbury's steps up store plans

Sainsbury's

A full planning application has been submitted by Sainsbury's to build a new supermarket in the Borders.

The company hopes to construct the 30,000 sq ft store at a site at Pinnaclehill in Kelso.

Earlier this year Scottish Borders Council backed its outline plans while rejecting two rival developments.

Sainsbury's says it believes the town is currently "limited in terms of main food provision" and its store would also provide 200 jobs.

Councillors were asked in May this year to decide between three potential sites for a supermarket in the town.

They followed planning officer advice and turned down Tesco's bid for a store near Spylaw farm in the town.

The council also came out against a proposal by Deanway Development for a site at Station Road.

Instead, they approved outline plans for the Sainsbury's project.

The company has now come forward with a full planning application for its scheme.
