A man who died after a head-on crash on the A75 Gretna to Stranraer road has been named by police.

Simpson Wood, from Pemberton in Wigan, was cut free from his car after the collision on Friday afternoon.

Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary said the 84-year-old was the driver of a Rover car, which was involved in the crash with a Toyota people carrier.

Mr Wood's female passenger was in a critical condition and seven people in the other vehicle had minor injuries.

The road, which is about half a mile west of Gretna, was closed for seven hours after the collision.
