Students step onto 'super campus'

A £37m development to complete a "super campus" in south west Scotland has opened its doors to students.

The new Dumfries and Galloway College on the Crichton site in Dumfries replaces its old building in Heathhall on the outskirts of the town.

It will cater for 6,000 full and part-time students with 300 staff.

It joins the Universities of Glasgow and the West of Scotland, the Open University and Scottish Agricultural College, which are already on the site.

All the institutions involved hope to benefit from the single campus.

They say it offers the opportunity to share resources, facilities and knowledge.

A further boost for the campus will come later this month when the University of Glasgow takes its first new intake of students on the site for two years.

It nearly pulled out of the Crichton last year due to funding problems.
