BMW clocked at 122mph in campaign

A BMW driver was clocked at 122mph in a 60mph zone during a weekend campaign targeting Scotland's rural roads.

He was one of six drivers caught travelling at 100mph or more on the A702 in the Scottish Borders.

Supt Alan Duncan of Lothian and Borders Police said it was "disappointing" to find so many people driving at such dangerous speeds.

All the people who were caught were cautioned and charged and will appear at court at a later date.

Lothian and Borders Police were participating in a Scotland-wide initiative spearheaded by the Association of Chief Police Officers Scotland (Acpos).

The country roads awareness weekend saw officers deployed on rural routes throughout the force area in order to target offenders.

A number of speeding drivers were detected over the course of the weekend, six of them on the A702 in the Borders.

The route runs from Edinburgh, through the Borders and into Dumfries and Galloway.

Another man was also caught driving his vehicle at 122mph on the M8.

Supt Duncan said that police would continue to monitor the Borders route in the weeks ahead.

"Driving at such excessive speeds on roads such as the A702 is highly dangerous, and poses a very real risk to other road users," he said.

"We hope that the initiative that has taken place this weekend shows that this kind of activity will not be tolerated.

"Anyone who breaks the speed limit to such an extent can expect to be robustly dealt with."
