'Fitting' home for Hislop tribute

Steve Hislop's motorbike

An exhibition celebrating the life of Borders superbike champion Steve Hislop has been moved to a new home.

The memorabilia has been transferred to Hawick Museum alongside a display dedicated to another racer who also came from the town, Jimmie Guthrie.

Curator Shona Sinclair said it seemed "fitting" that the stories of two great riders should be told under one roof.

Steve Hislop died when his helicopter crashed into hills near Hawick almost five years ago.

The Borders racer was twice British superbike champion and one of the most successful riders in the history of the Isle of Man TT races.

His death in 2003 shocked the motorsport world.

'Remarkable stories'

An exhibition was set up the following year in Hawick's Drumlanrig Tower but it has now moved to its new surroundings.

Ms Sinclair said: "With agreement from Steve's family and friends, the decision was made to create a new Hizzy Room in Hawick Museum.

"We already have a display dedicated to Jimmie Guthrie so it seemed fitting to unite the remarkable stories of two of the greatest motorcycle riders of their generations under one roof."

Guthrie was born in Hawick in 1897 and won 19 grand prix races and six Isle of Man TT races before his death during a race in 1937.
