Thieves have taken a haul of more than 100 fish valued at about £2,000 from Logan Botanic Garden in Galloway.
Stranraer officers have launched an investigation into the theft of the koi carp - thought to have taken place at some time since early December.
The fish were a mix of colours and some weighed as much as eight pounds.
A police spokesman said early signs were that the fish had been stolen from the Port Logan site rather than being victims of any natural predator.
Many of the fish in the pond were donated to the garden by members of the public.
Police have asked for anyone with information to contact them or the confidential Crimestoppers phoneline.
