Thieves take cars back to owners

Keys An unusual spate of car thefts in the Scottish Borders is being investigated by police.

The vehicles have all been taken at night - but returned before the owners even noticed that they were missing.

The offences have only come to light because keys have been put back in the wrong place, the cars are in different positions or the mileage has changed.

At least eight cars have been taken in Jedburgh recently and driven for long distances before being returned.

On one occasion in September last year, a car stolen from the town crashed in Innerleithen almost 30 miles away - and three people were seen running from the vehicle.

"Perhaps someone knows a person who lives in Jedburgh who has been turning up in another town or place during the early hours of the morning in a different car each time"

All the other thefts, since Boxing Day, have resulted in the cars being returned.

The thieves have entered homes, removed the car keys and gone for a drive before returning the keys and the vehicles.

Det Con John Brownlee of Lothian and Borders Police appealed for information.

"We are convinced that the cars are being driven over a reasonable distance during the night and we are concerned by the frequency of these thefts," he said.

"Perhaps someone knows a person who lives in Jedburgh who has been turning up in another town or place during the early hours of the morning in a different car each time."

Police said there was no pattern to the days of the week they have been taken and cars have been targeted all over Jedburgh.
