Round-the-world win for skipper

Duggie Gillespie, from Kirkcudbright, only took on his role after the first skipper of the New York got injured.

He won the second leg from Brazil to South Africa last year and now his team has clinched another triumph - this time from Australia to Singapore.

The weekend result puts the yacht in contention for overall victory in the 35,000-mile global Clipper race.

The 41-year-old Scots skipper was delighted to win another stage of the event.

'Worked hard'

"I'm relieved and very, very pleased," he said.

"The team worked really hard for this and everyone is very happy.

"You always hear skippers say that at the end of races but in this case it's true - it just went so well, everything slotted into place and now we're going to sit back for a few days and enjoy the victory."

Three legs of the race remain taking the crews to China, America and Jamaica before finishing in Liverpool in July.
