Malaya veterans renew medals vow

Malaya soldiers A squad of veteran soldiers from the South of Scotland said they are determined to wear "disputed" medals they received in Malaysia on Saturday.

The former King's Own Scottish Borderers were in Malaysia marking the 50th anniversary of their "lad's war".

They were presented with the medals to mark their part in tackling communist insurgents and paving the way for eventual independence.

However, the UK Government has not yet formally recognised the medals.

The ex-servicemen are now fighting a new battle to convince the government that they should be allowed to wear the medals along with their other British campaign medals.

Malaya veteran Jimmy Roberts, from Dalbeattie, said: "After all the sweat and toil and dirty work we had to do, it is an honour to receive the medal.

"I don't see why we can not wear it in Britain. It's unfair and ridiculous."
