Optimism over hospital campaign

Representatives from action groups in Coldstream and Jedburgh visited Andy Kerr at St Andrew's House in Edinburgh.

Jedburgh Provost Len Wyse said he hoped it would be possible to keep some hospital beds in the town.

Lib Dem MSP Euan Robson, who was part of the delegation, said it was vital to be in "at the ground floor".

The board of NHS Borders has unanimously agreed to close both hospitals but that decision could still be overturned by the health minister.

Promise welcomed

"We do realise our hospital is maybe getting a bit frayed around the edges," said Mr Wyse.

"But we are hoping to be able to work with NHS Borders and maybe look for some way to improve the situation.

"Change has to happen but we still think there is a need for beds in Jedburgh."

Mr Robson welcomed the minister's promise to recognise the strength of opposition to the plans.

Mr Kerr promised he would oppostion argument "side by side" with the board's case, Mr Robson said.
