Polish man attack 'was a one off'

Alexander Drive

Scotland's Polish Consul has said he believes an attack on a foreign man in Aberdeen was an isolated incident.

Polish national Jaroslaw Janeczek, 39, was assaulted by two men in Alexander Drive, in the Tillydrone area, early on Saturday morning.

The cleaner suffered serious head and internal injuries.

Piotr Leszczynski, who visited the victim in hospital, said: "I am very reassured that there is no pattern of racism here."

He said: "This is an incident which has occurred and should be treated as a single incident.

"If anyone has any information that could be useful for the police in this case, or any other case involving the Polish community, I'd like to encourage them to report it to the police."

'Abhorrent attack'

Grampian Police Det Sgt Doug Steele said: "We are working very hard to bring this enquiry to a successful conclusion.

"We are still very keen to talk to anyone who may have information which could help us.

"This was a brutal and unprovoked attack with a racist element to it."

He added: "The vast majority of people in the north east and in Tillydrone itself will find this kind of attack abhorrent and we would look to our communities to help us track down the men responsible."

One of the attackers was described as slim, between 20 and 25 years old, and wearing a white tracksuit.

The other man was stocky, with short black hair, between 20 and 30, and was wearing a grey or red top and blue jeans.

The men also had two dogs described as pit bull terrier types.
