Overnight ship stays 'pose risk'

Ship owners have been told they could be breaching health and safety guidelines by allowing crew members to remain onboard vessels overnight.

The warning from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) follows the deaths of three men in a fire on a ship in Fraserburgh Harbour this summer.

The MCA said safety systems intended for use at sea may become inadequate when the ship is shut down in harbour.

It said action could be taken by inspectors who discover offenders.

Rimants Venckus, 50, from Latvia, and Filipinos Ramilito Capangpangan Calipayan and Benjamin Rosello Potot, both 33, died on Friday 1 August.

They were on board the prawn trawler Vision II.
