Tycoon encourages young to give

One of Scotland's richest businessmen has been encouraging schoolchildren to support charity.

Sir Ian Wood set up a charitable trust a year ago which has passed more than £2m on to good causes.

The Aberdeen businessman has given thousands of pounds to several city schools for pupils to pass to charities of their choice.

He told BBC Scotland: "In Scotland the word philanthropy has emerged as a strong movement."

The hope is to invest £50m in charities over the next 10 years.

One secondary pupil involved the the project said: "I think it's really important because the charities we looked at did not get a lot of money."

Sir Ian is chairman of the multi-million pound energy services firm, John Wood Group.

It is one of the UK's largest energy services companies.

Sir Ian has chaired the company since 1982 and was awarded a knighthood in the 1994 honours list.
