The discovery of a dead dog, along with a maltreated one, at Aberdeen beach is being probed by police and animal welfare experts.
The two young female Staffordshire bull terriers were found on Monday.
One was dead and the other - now recovering at an animal home - was extremely emaciated.
Grampian Police is investigating along with the Scottish SPCA, which described it as a very bad case. It is suspected the dogs belonged to the same owner.
Scottish SPCA inspector Alison Simpson told BBC Scotland of the survivor: "The dog was emaciated with no sort of body weight.
"It takes quite a long time for a dog to get into a condition like that."
She urged anyone with information to contact the Scottish SPCA on 03000 999 999.
It is thought the dead dog may have been knocked down by a vehicle, so motorists could also have useful information.
