Liquid ecstasy deaths probe find

Scene of Peterhead deaths

Police probing the deaths of two men in Peterhead have recovered a substance which turns into 'liquid ecstasy'.

GBL turns into GHB, which is known as liquid ecstasy, once it passes into the bloodstream.

The bodies of the two local men were found at a flat in Peterhead's Kirk Street on Saturday evening.

Grampian Police said inquiries were continuing into the deaths, which were earlier described as possibly being drug-related.

GBL is perfectly legal, unlike the so-called date-rape drug GHB, and is found in products such as nail varnish remover and paint stripper.

Both drugs are increasingly being used in the gay club scene, and doctors have warned their use is far more dangerous than regular ecstasy.

'Serious consequences'

Insp David Smith said: "There is little evidence of the widespread misuse of the substance but it is known that its use can lead to potentially serious consequences.

"A very small amount of it can have an adverse effect on the body. Those who abuse it may end up in hospital as the result of an emergency admission and there have been fatalities reported which have subsequently shown traces of the chemical being present.

"People who seek to misuse GBL need to be aware of the potentially serious consequences that can arise from taking the substance and anyone experiencing ill effects should seek assistance immediately."

Floral tributes and football shirts were left outside the front door of the flats where the men were found.
