Fisheries receive £200,000 award

Scottish fisheries will receive more than £200,000 of new funding to help sustainability, it has been announced.

First Minister Alex Salmond made the announcement at Peterhead Harbour with the aim of helping achieve independent sustainability certification.

It follows the successful certification of North Sea herring by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC).

The MSC certification scheme recognises responsible and sustainable working practices to conserve stocks.

Mr Salmond said: "Scotland's fishing industry is to be congratulated on its success in achieving MSC certification for Scottish North Sea herring and its work to harvest fish in a sustainable and responsible manner.

"Scottish seafood is amongst the best in the world and contributes more than £400m to our economy.

"This new investment of over £200,000 highlights the Scottish Government's firm commitment to Scottish fisheries and to ensuring they are well managed, sustainable and profitable."
