Explosive find closes down school

Rathen School

Pupils and staff were evacuated from a school following the discovery of an explosive device in a drain.

Rathen School in Fraserburgh was closed after the discovery of the device, which was thought to date back to as early as World War I.

Eighty pupils and eight members of staff were moved to a nearby church.

An army bomb disposal team later declared the 6in device to be safe. It was discovered by a janitor who was clearing a drain in the playground.
