All-black police uniforms introduced across Scotland last year are to be ditched by some Grampian officers in favour of more traditional clothing.
The US-style lightweight outfits, recommended by the Association of Chief Police Officers in Scotland (Acpos), were trialled in Grampian for a year.
BBC Scotland can reveal the force has decided they are only suitable for operational duties with body amour.
Other officers will revert to wearing white shirt and tie.
A spokesman said no money had been wasted because police had held on to their old uniforms.
"It is a lightweight material and very comfortable so great for use with body armour, but it was decided that it was less appropriate for non-operational duties"
The all-black combo - which features combat trousers and a tight T-shirt - was ideal for use under body amour when officers' duties were often physically challenging, he said.
However it was felt that it was less appropriate for officers attending meetings, working with the public in community settings and other non-operational work.
The spokesman said: "It is a lightweight material and very comfortable so great for use with body armour, but it was decided that it was less appropriate for non-operational duties.
"That's why it's been decided not to wear the all-black uniform then.
Strathclyde Police was the first force to introduce the all-black uniform, which is now used widely across Scotland.
It has been criticised by some human rights groups, who believe it gives police a more intimidating, paramilitary-style appearance.
