Two new schools to replace five

Plans to replace five primary schools in the Highlands with two new buildings are to be submitted to the Scottish government by Highland Council.

Fort William and Upper Achintore, along with Obsdale, Ardross and Newmore, would be closed under the proposals.

Higher priority will be given to the new Fort William school because of the large number of pupils involved.

Meanwhile, a school in Drumnadrochit and another in Inverness could be expanded to improve Gaelic teaching.

Highland Council's education, culture and sport committee agreed to plans for two new classrooms for Bun-sgoil Ghaidhlig Inbhir Nis Gaelic school in Inverness and additional space at Glenurquhart Primary School in Drumnadrochit.

Plans for the two new buildings will have to be approved by the government.
