Underwear cyclists' cells request

Two men who cycled from Land's End to John O'Groats in only their underwear have revealed how they sought shelter in a town's police cells.

Adam Dunn and Gavin Topley, from Branksome, near Bournemouth, took no money, food or other clothes.

They relied on offers of free accommodation and meals along the way.

Mr Topley said police in Wick had to turn down their request on Saturday because a local show was on and officers expected the cells to be busy.

The two men reached John O'Groats on Sunday and are now making their journey home, catching lifts by car where they can.

Raising money for ActionAid, the pair have made it to Edinburgh and hope to be back home by Wednesday.

They are now wearing shorts and the charity's t-shirts.

Earlier fears

Mr Topley said: "When we got to Wick we asked the police if we could sleep in the cells for the night, but they said the local county show was on and they expected them to be full."

One of the officers on duty offered the cyclists a place to sleep before their final push to John O'Groats.

Earlier fears of being bitten by midges were realised shortly after they reached the Highlands.

Arriving late in Glencoe because of a puncture, they failed to find somewhere to stay and spent a night in woods.

Mr Topley said: "I still have lumps on my arms where they bit us."
