Ten years for 'horrific' attack

A 28-year-old who repeatedly stabbed another man in a knife attack has been sentenced at the High Court in Inverness to 10 years in prison.

Following a 10-day trial, a jury found Daniel McLean guilty of attempted murder.

McLean, described as a prisoner in Inverness, left his victim Steven Bremner with permanent scars in the attack in Tain last September.

Police, who described the incident as "horrific", welcomed the sentence.

Judge Lord Carloway told McLean he was lucky not be appearing on a murder charge.

DS Michael Sutherland, Northern Constabulary's senior investigating officer on the case, said the attack left Mr Bremner scarred physically and mentally.

The officer said: "The sentence handed out by the court reflect the severity of this crime and sends out a clear message to others that knife crime will not be tolerated."

He added: "I would like to pay tribute to the hard work and dedication of the inquiry team, which produced the evidence required to secure this conviction. I would also like to thank the public for their support during the inquiry."
