Scottish football legend Kenny Dalglish has urged anyone with information that could help find missing islander Simon MacMillan to come forward.

Mr MacMillan, 21, from South Uist, was last seen early on Boxing Day.

Dalglish, honorary president of Uist's Askernish Golf Club, described the Merchant Navy cadet as a "keen footballer and a great lad".

The former Liverpool and Celtic star had met Mr MacMillan while visiting the Western Isles with his wife.

In a statement released by Northern Constabulary, Dalglish said: "I am appealing for anyone with any snippet of information that could help locate Simon to come forward.

"He is a great lad, a great piper and a keen footballer. If anyone saw anything, no matter how insignificant they think it is, they should tell the police."

He added: "We have got to know the islands over recent years and were not surprised to see the huge community support for the MacMillan family and the hundreds of people that are turning out to search for Simon."

Meanwhile, police also released details of a vehicle they hope to trace, which is thought to have been parked on the Ardkenneth Road on South Uist at about 0330 GMT on Boxing Day.

A police spokesman said: "Northern Constabulary are keen to hear from the driver or passengers of a vehicle believed to have been parked on the Ardkenneth Road, near to St Michael's Church, Ardkenneth, South Uist."

The force also warned people not to search for Mr MacMillan in bad weather. Force nine winds are expected to hit the Western Isles over the weekend.
