Major funds awarded to new marina

Plans to add a marina to the largest harbour on the east coast of Caithness has secured a £576,000 funding package.

Alternative sources of income have been sought for Wick harbour because of a decline in fish landings.

Proposals for a marina come on the back of a 40% increase in trade following the opening of 12 pontoons for yachts last year.

The deal involves Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE), Crown Estate and the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority.

The nuclear authority is part of efforts to find employment and create business opportunities as the workforce at the Dounreay nuclear complex is gradually reduced during its decommission.

Willie Watt, chairman of Wick Harbour Authority, said: "This project is a major step forward in diversifying activities in the harbour and provides an important new income stream."
