Hostel key to reviving community

Kyleakin - Undiscovered Scotland

Villagers on Skye are hoping to buy and then reopen a youth hostel which is seen as the "commercial heart" of the community.

The former Kyleakin International Youth Hostel is up for sale after closing.

Kyleakin and Kylerhea Community Company has started drawing up plans in the hope of taking it over.

Meanwhile, Kyleakin Environmental Group is in the initial stages of a proposal to create a 6.5 mile cycle path to link the village with Broadford.

Flora Strachan, a director of the community company, said the hostel had been the commercial heart of the village.

She said Kyleakin had several shops, but had suffered after the ferry service was replaced by the Skye Bridge.
